How to Navigate in Scripto

View and Sorting

Once you have created an account and logged in, you are ready to transcribe. You will see items in the collection arranged in tiles or in a list; you may control the view.

The items have been uploaded in chronological order (with one or two exceptions) to give our volunteers a sense of the correspondence progressing through time. To sort the items from oldest to most recent, choose "ID" > "Ascending." You may also filter by status (see below).

Transcription Status

You will see different item statuses below the images: "New," "In Progress," "Completed," and "Approved."

  • New and In Progress items are ready for you to jump in and transcribe.
    • Click on the image or the letter title and it will open up showing all the pages as separate items.
    • Click on the "Transcribe" link under each image and you will see the image on the left and the field for typing your transcription on the right.
    • Follow the Guidelines for Transcribing and use the Tagging Shortcuts to work on the document.
    • Do not use the Bold, Italics, Underline, or any other buttons in the blue bar above the  typing field.
    • The image viewer will allow you to zoom in and out and drag the image to make it easier to read.
    • Click Save in the upper right regularly. You are welcome to leave the page at any time, at any stage of completion.
    • If you have completed the page and proofread your work, you may check the  box when you Save.
    • If you would like to leave a note to other volunteers or to the Administrators, click on View notes and then Edit.
  • Completed items have been marked as finished by a fellow volunteer, but have not yet been Approved and locked by the Administrators.
    • You can still click on "Transcribe" under a page image. Please proofread the work that a fellow volunteer has done and save your changes. You may View Notes to see if a tricky word or line has been flagged for assistance.

  • Approved items have been locked by the Administrators, but are still available for you to read the completed transcription.  It is possible that some pages of a document have been approved and others are still open to editing.

This is a large collection that has been catalogued by several people of over the years: human error may have resulted in dates that don't match what appears on the letters, or the wrong Muhlenberg family member being referenced. If you notice an error in which the date, title, recipient, or other piece of metadata is incorrect, please record it in the Notes.
