& one of them may possibly be here on Monday. Three of our men are also sick & will not be brought up. On Monday we are in hopes to have them at the house — when we can probably carry the question & force a vote. It will be neck & neck however & neither party will succeed by more than a couple of votes. We were defeated on the first question by 113 to 119 by which <personName>[unclear]</personName> & <personName>Claeborne</personName> (<personName>VanBuren</personName> men) lose their deals. The question at issue now is a declaration that <personName>Prentis</personName> & <personName>Mozal</personName> (opposition men) are not members, by whither they will all be sent home & a new election ordered. I hope we may succeed. If we are defeated we shall scarcely be able to carry any important questions & may even possibly be thrown into a minority. This is the reason why neither Mr <personName>[unclear]</personName> nor myself wish to move in my business until the question is decided. One vote may be of great importance & I could not well remain and vote after my nomination was conferred. The opposition would make a great cry about it.
