& matter of our chaplain but yet it reminds me of dear home & family practises when I go & aside from other things producing on that account agreeable feelings. It was beside Whitsuntide when I knew you would all go to church unless some thing particular interfered. There is always, aside from duty, a pleasure in doing at the same time what we know those we love are doing.

It seems our friends were somewhat overreached in the <placeName>Borough</placeName> election. Such things must be calculated on as happening occasionally & therefore there is no reason for fretting about it. In truth I should not be much surprised, taking all things into consideration, if there should be a small majority against us in the <placeName>Borough</placeName>. It was always somewhat enclined to the opposition, as are all towns. It is the Country, which is free, in some measure, from certain influences, to which we must look for support for the free institutions of the Country. It really sickens a mans heart to percieve with what boldness certain intrigues are carried on here. I am sure I am in bounds when I say that the Bank has paid for the printing & distribution of one million of speeches this winter - & that members of Congress cannot have loaned to them less than $800.000 & the mass of it with insufficient security - But my paper is full. God bless you dear Love & all our children. With ardent & sincere affection

Ever Yours
