Recent Developments

Online Access to American Chemical Society (ACS) Core Journals

We are happy to make available 26 more ACS journals in 2008. The American Chemical Society publishes many core journals for the field of chemistry. Unfortunately, we have been limited in how many subscriptions we could afford from this one publisher because the average cost is over $2,300 per title. This year we have converted our ACS print subscriptions to a package of online journals. As a result, for a slight increase in cost, we now have access to the following 35 journals:

  • Accounts of Chemical Research
  • ACS Chemical Biology
  • ACS Nano
  • Analytical Chemistry
  • Biochemistry
  • Bioconjugate Chemistry
  • Biomacromolecules
  • Biotechnology Progress
  • Chemical & Engineering News
  • Chemical Research In Toxicology
  • Chemical Reviews
  • Chemistry of Materials
  • Crystal Growth & Design
  • Energy & Fuels
  • Environmental Science & Technology
  • Industrial & Engineering Chemistry Research
  • Inorganic Chemistry
  • Journal of Agricultural & Food Chemistry
  • Journal of Chemical & Engineering Data
  • Journal of Chemical Information & Modeling
  • Journal of Chemical Theory & Computation
  • Journal of Combinatorial Chemistry
  • Journal of Medicinal Chemistry
  • Journal of Natural Products
  • Journal of Organic Chemistry
  • Journal of Physical Chemistry Parts A, B & C
  • Journal of Proteome Research
  • Journal of the American Chemical Society
  • Langmuir

  • Molecular Pharmaceutics
  • Nano Letters
  • Organic Letters
  • Organic Process Research & Development

Moving Subscriptions from Print to Online Access

In the past few years we have been building our access to online resources which are heavily used by students and faculty. You may recall that we have purchased access to several of the JSTOR Collections. The collections we’ve selected cut across the disciplines. You may not realize that JSTOR is an archival database – coverage often starts with the first issue but does not extend to the current issue. However, you have access to the current issue of many of these titles either through an online database or an individual print subscription held by Trexler Library. In order to give you seamless access to these titles (or as close as possible), we are working toward switching the print subscriptions to online access. This year we are switching 30 titles over to online-only access. The following titles available in JSTOR will also have the current issues available online in 2008:

  • African Affairs
  • American Journal of Political Science
  • American Political Science Review
  • China Quarterly
  • Comparative Studies in Society and History
  • Ecological Applications
  • Ecological Monographs
  • Ecology
  • Economic Journal
  • English Historical Review
  • Evolution
  • Family Relations
  • Historical Journal
  • International Affairs
  • Journal of Asian Studies
  • Journal of Economic History
  • Journal of Finance
  • Journal of Latin American Studies
  • Journal of Marriage and Family
  • Journal of Modern African Studies
  • Journal of Politics
  • Journal of the American Academy of Religion
  • Mind
  • Modern Asian Studies
  • Modern Language Journal
  • Musical Quarterly
  • Past & Present
  • Philosophical Quarterly
  • Philosophy & Phenomenological Research
  • Philosophy & Public Affairs
  • Russian Review

Because of year-end changes in publishers, pricing, and inclusion in database collections, you will find other titles have either become available online or have been removed from a database. To check availability of any title, please search the Trexler Library catalog. To see a list of E-journals by subject, from the library home page, go to Find ? Show more ? E-journals A-Z. Select a subject from the drop-down box in the middle of the screen.

Infomaniac Tip of the Week

Infomaniac says …

The recent buzz in Trexler concerns Open Access to scholarly communications at Harvard. Last week, Arts and Sciences faculty at Harvard University voted unanimously to make all scholarly articles freely available to the public through an online repository. The proposed system requires faculty to submit articles to the Provost’s office, and would allow faculty to retain copyright to their work. Harvard University Library will create an Office for Scholarly Communication to host the repository. Faculty would also have the option of filing a waiver, allowing their work to be published in an academic journal. The goal is to provide access to scholarly research to the widest possible audience.
