Dr. Carla Hayden becomes the first woman and the first African American to be confirmed as Librarian of Congress

Dr. Carla Hayden, previous president of the American Library Association, and current chief executive of the Enoch Pratt Free Library, becomes the first woman and the first African American to be confirmed as Librarian of Congress.  Hayden won praise for keeping the Enoch Pratt Free Library open during the unrest in Baltimore after the shooting death of Freddie Gray.  President Obama nominated Dr. Hayden for Librarian of Congress after the retirement of Dr. James H. Billington in September 2015.  The Senate confirmed Dr. Hayden on July 13th as the 14th Librarian of Congress.
