On January 18, Trexler Library staff participated in the Library’s second annual Day of Service at Second Harvest Foodbank of Allentown.
In the morning, staff packed bags for the Backpack Buddies project, which serves needy children who rely on school breakfast and lunch programs for most of their meals. Backpack Buddies provides these children with nutritious food, drinks and snacks to get them through the weekends.
Later that day, library staff went to a different warehouse to sort donations from a local large retailer. Items were organized by function–personal care, clothing and toys, for example–and would later be distributed to needy individuals and families.
At the end of the day, staff were tired but glad for the opportunity to give back to the community and help those who have happened upon hard times. It was a reminder of how lucky we are and how important it is to look beyond ourselves and lend a hand to others less fortunate.
