Infomaniac Tip of the Week

Are you frustrated by not having the software you need everywhere you go? When working from computers in your office, at home, in the classroom, at the library, and/or at a conference, it may be frustrating to not have the tools you need readily available. Using portable software can help get you the applications you need on the go.

Portable software (aka portable applications) are applications that can be saved to a thumb drive or other portable storage device. The applications are then available on any computer hooked up to that drive, without having to download or install anything on the local computer. Even personal settings can be maintained. Note that some portable applications may be more streamlined versions of the parent software, with fewer advanced features.

Portable software is available for internet browsers, bookmark managers, email and instant messaging clients, media players, open source office software, and more. Many popular portable applications are available at http://portableapps.com/apps. Search online for more lists of available portable software (e.g., search “portable software”) or search for the portable version of your favorite software (e.g., search “portable firefox”).
