The Deep Web: What Is It and How Can I Search It?

The Deep Web, sometimes called the invisible web, refers to online content that standard search engines cannot index. Much of this “hidden” information is in online databases and dynamically generated sites and, therefore, not reachable by traditional web crawling or searching means. Content may also be unlinked or private, preventing search engines from finding it.

The hidden nature of the Deep Web does not, however, mean that content is unobtainable. Deep Web content is accessible by means beyond basic search engines. Using searchable databases of “invisible” content is often the best strategy. These may include your favorite library subscription databases (e.g., Academic Search Premier, JSTOR, ScienceDirect), freely available databases online populated (and sometimes annotated) by staff/volunteers (e.g., Intute http://www.intute.ac.uk/ or Librarians’ Internet Index http://lii.org/), or collaboratively created databases (e.g., Delicious http://delicious.com/ or Digghttp://digg.com/). You can also use your standard search engine to locate databases on your topic. That is to say, rather than just searching Google for information on specific native plants, search for native plants database and then search on your query in the database(s) you find.
