We have long been accustomed to seeing electoral maps in red and blue based on the geographical boundaries of states, but datavisualization specialist John Nelson takes what he calls a “pointillist” approach by basing his map on population density. Despite pundits’ declarations that as a nation we are politically polarized, the actual picture is much more nuanced–and purple!
