A Bi-Weekly Update

An Audio Excerpt
As part of the Faculty and Staff Favorites series running this fall, Dean Karen Green discussed the No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency by Alexander McCall Smith on Sept. 30. This discussion, held in Trexler Library and attended by a sizable number of students, faculty and community, also featured slides from Professor Chrysan Cronin’s recent trip to Botswana. Here is an audio excerpt from the event for your listening pleasure!

US Government Data Mashups
The Sunlight Foundation, a non-partisan, non-profit organization, “focuses on the digitization of government data and the creation of tools and Web sites to make that data easily accessible for all citizens.” In addition to policy, advocacy, and investigative work, the Sunlight Foundation promotes open source technology development in service of its goal of transparency in government. Toward that end, the foundation has recently sponsored a few data mashup contests. The contests required developers to build applications that provide access to government data in easy-to-use and innovative ways. Check out a few of the recent finalists:
- DataMasher allows you connect any two available data sets. Browse already created data mashups or create your own.
- ThisWeKnow helps you find government data by city or zip code.
See more winners, finalists, and entrants: 2007 Mashup Contest winner and finalists and 2009 Apps for America winners (plus all 2009 entrants).
