Quilts on the Library Terraces

Quilts in Trexler Library

In 1987, planning for the Trexler Library had reached the point to consider artwork purchases. With help from donors, four quilts were purchased for the library from the Mennonite Central Committee’s Pennsylvania Relief Auction (with proceeds benefitting Ethiopian refugees in the Sudan). These four quilts were displayed in the newly constructed Trexler Library, along with additional quilts purchased in the following years. At some point one or two of the quilts were stolen from the library, with one recovered in 1992. In 2009, two quilts were donated to and installed in the Trexler Library to replace the older quilts that were faded after 20 years of library-display.

The Trexler Library also has many books and films with quilts as the main focus. Some describe the history of quilts, some are works of fiction, and others treat quilts as an art form and describe an artist’s work or an art exhibit. Quilts have long held an important place in the social fabric of the United States.

See the Trexler Library’s current quilts from the library’s terraces. In addition there is a display on Terrace A featuring pictures of formerly displayed Trexler Library quilts, as well as some of the library’s books focused on quilts and quilting.
