***Muhlenberg College Joins NITLE***

Muhlenberg College is a now a member of the National Institute for Technology in Liberal Education(NITLE), thanks to shared sponsorship by the Provost, the Office of Information Technology, and Trexler Library. NITLE is a non-profit organization focused on helping liberal arts colleges and universities with “the integration of technology into teaching and learning, strategic approaches to managing technology infrastructure on small campuses, and the impact and implications of emerging technologies for liberal education.”

How Can NITLE Help You?

Faculty and staff can take advantage of a wide range of conferences, workshops, and more at a reduced member rate (or even free of charge, in many cases).

Praise for Early English Books Online

In the fall of 2009, Muhlenberg College purchased access to Early English Books Online, or EEBO, an online archive of nearly every English-language title published in the period 1473-1700. We asked Tom Cartelli how he uses this in his teaching and research. Here is his enthusiastic reply:

“Funny you should ask. In the last six weeks or so alone, I’ve downloaded about (8) full text editions of books from the early modern period dealing with everything from the Pequot wars in New England to the alleged threats mounted against the Church of England by early English Baptists. These are texts I wouldn’t, in pre-EEBO days, even have had the chance to see, much less work with, without making a 2-week visit to the Folger Library in DC.

“What’s more, I recently discovered how valuable a resource EEBO can be for initiating and supporting student research when I took a student of mine, who was blocked in her effort to develop an independent study project, on a brief database voyage through the EEBO titles. Within minutes, we had identified and downloaded two books on her subject–fools and jesters–published smack dab in her period of inquiry (1590-1620) and she had at her fingertips a set of primary sources that would actually allow her the opportunity to say something new about the development of the professional Fool instead of simply parroting what secondary sources have to say. I know this may be a luxury but I can no longer imagine being without it. Thanks!” –Tom
